The biggest release so far. Eight more interface languages, spelling checks in Polish and Portuguese, charts, SmartArt and field codes, print preview, safer saving, and better handling of Chinese documents.
WordCraft 0.6.1 came out on 12 October 2026, a day after 0.5.0, with more than 200 changes. There’s no 0.6.0 release on GitHub. The changes fall into a few groups.
More languages
Interface. Turkish, Russian, Italian, German, Polish, Czech, French and Bulgarian are new, which brings the interface to 18 languages. New documents follow your region’s paper size, units and decimal separator (A4 and centimetres outside the US), and sorting follows the text’s language.
Spelling and grammar. Polish and Portuguese are checked with a Hunspell dictionary installed on your computer, and words in other languages are no longer flagged as English mistakes. Your custom dictionary is kept between sessions.
Scripts. Myanmar, Khmer and Indic scripts are shaped correctly, and Arabic, Hebrew and Kurdish paragraphs switch to right-to-left as you type. Tables and sections can run right to left.
Chinese documents
The font list shows installed Chinese fonts by their Chinese names in a Chinese interface. The Font dialog sets Asian and Latin fonts separately.
Indents set in characters, such as a first-line indent of two characters, are read and saved. Old .doc files keep their indents and exact line spacing. In one thesis the developers looked at, this took the page count from 49 down to 29. Word shows about 27.
Numbering can use Chinese, Japanese and Korean formats such as 一、二、三.
New: Phonetic Guide (pinyin or furigana over text), Enclose Characters, the document grid (lines per page and characters per line) and vertical text.
Text you’re still typing with an input method no longer shows as boxes.
New Word features
Charts and SmartArt. Insert › Chart creates and edits column, bar, line, pie, area, scatter and doughnut charts, and Insert › SmartArt creates list, process, cycle, hierarchy and other graphics. Charts and SmartArt that come from Word are shown, but still can’t be edited.
Fields. Show, edit, update, unlink and lock field codes as in Word.
Track changes. Moved text is tracked as a move, and deletions can be shown in balloons.
References. Eight more bibliography styles, Caption, Index, Table of Contents and Create Source dialogs, and a Table of Authorities you can update. Citation sources are now saved in the .docx.
Mail merge. Excel and OpenDocument spreadsheets work as recipient lists, and the Skip Record If, Next Record and If…Then…Else rules work in the preview.
Drawing and objects. A Drawing Canvas, WordArt effects, connectors between shapes, an icon library, and text wrapping that follows an object’s outline.
Views and navigation. Outline view, a paged Reading Mode, Hide White Space, and Alt+Q for the “Tell me” command search. Word’s common keyboard shortcuts were added, and you can customise the keyboard, the ribbon and the Quick Access Toolbar.
Tables. Resize by dragging borders, select and insert with the mouse, and double-click a border to AutoFit.
Printing. File › Print gets a preview, page ranges, copies and collation. Comments can be included in printouts and PDFs.
Accessibility. Alt text for every object and a deeper accessibility checker. The document’s text is exposed to screen readers, though the developers haven’t yet tried it with real ones.
Files and safety
Saving no longer risks the original file. If something goes wrong before the new file replaces it, the original survives.
Fonts embedded in a .docx, custom XML data and Word’s own ink drawings are kept when you save.
Word XML documents (Flat OPC) open and save, and Word 2003 XML documents open.
Old .doc files bring in their pictures, shapes, tab stops and section breaks.
The MCP server can be confined to the folders you choose.
Windows, Linux and macOS
Windows. The 32-bit build now starts, using OpenGL. The “Parent device is lost” crash caused by other programs’ DirectX files is fixed. WordCraft can make itself the default app for Word documents from its Options.
Linux. On Wayland desktops the app runs through XWayland by default, so you can drag files into the window. Opening and saving work without a portal file dialog.
Layout. Many fixes bring line spacing, kerning, space before paragraphs, list indents and heading numbers closer to Word.
Updating
