The short version: GetWordCraft has no accounts and no ads. We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read, and it sets two cookies. Our web server keeps standard access logs for 30 days.

Server logs

When you open a page, our web server writes a standard access log entry: your IP address, the address of the page, the time, your browser’s user-agent string and the page that linked to us. We use these logs to keep the site running, spot abuse and fix errors. They are deleted automatically after 30 days, and we don’t sell or share them.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and learn which pages are useful. When a page loads, Google Analytics records the page address, the page that linked to it, your browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language, your approximate location (city or region) and how long you stay. It works out the location from your IP address; Google says Google Analytics 4 doesn’t log or store IP addresses.

It also sets two cookies on getwordcraft.org, _ga and _ga_4GCKY8N6H3. They hold a random ID so that repeat visits and sessions can be told apart, and they expire after 2 years.

Google Analytics keeps the detailed data for at most 14 months; summary reports, such as visits per month, are kept longer. We look at these reports only to improve the site. We don’t use them to identify anyone, and we don’t use them for advertising. Google explains how it handles this data in How Google uses information from sites that use its services.

If you’d rather not be counted, block cookies for this site, use a content blocker, or install Google’s opt-out browser add-on. The site works the same without it.

Downloads

Download links take you to GitHub, where the files are hosted, so GitHub’s privacy statement applies to the download itself. Our access logs record which download link was used.

Cookies and local storage

The only cookies are the two Google Analytics cookies described above. If you switch between the light and dark themes, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage and never leaves your device.

Other companies

Fonts, images and our own scripts are served from our server; the Google Analytics script is loaded from Google. The site is delivered through Cloudflare’s network, which caches pages and protects the server. Cloudflare handles these requests under its own privacy policy.

Changes to this page

If we add advertising or change what we measure, we will update this page first and change the date at the top.
