Why try it
What makes WordCraft different
Familiar from day one
Ribbon tabs, the Styles gallery and keyboard shortcuts work the way Word users expect: Ctrl/⌘+B for bold, F4 to repeat, F7 for spelling.
Works with .docx
Opens and saves Word documents, opens old .doc files, handles .odt, .rtf, HTML, Markdown and LaTeX, and exports PDF with selectable text.
Native and fast
Written in Rust and drawn on the GPU, with no Electron or web view. Its developers report that typing in a 188-page document re-lays it out in about 1.4 ms.
Works offline
Everything runs on your computer, including spelling and grammar checks.
Free and open source
Licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. The code is on GitHub, and you can build it yourself.
In your language
The interface is translated into many languages, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, German and Spanish, and follows your system language.
Questions
Common questions
Is WordCraft free?
Yes. WordCraft is free to download and use, and its source code is open under your choice of the MIT or Apache-2.0 licence.
Is this the official WordCraft website?
No. GetWordCraft is an independent site and is not affiliated with ArtCraft. The official sources are WordCraft on getartcraft.com and the GitHub repository. Every download link on this site goes to the official GitHub releases.
Can WordCraft open and save Word documents?
Yes. WordCraft opens and saves .docx files and can open older .doc files. It also opens and saves .odt, .rtf, HTML, Markdown, LaTeX and plain text, and exports PDF. It is still in alpha and hasn’t been tested against a large set of real-world documents yet, so keep a copy of anything important before you edit it.
Can WordCraft replace Microsoft Word?
Not completely, yet. As of October 2026 the WordCraft team estimates it is about 60% of the way to replacing Word for real work and about 63% for everyday essentials. It covers most of Word’s ribbon commands, but page layout can differ from Word and some content isn’t fully supported. See how it compares with Word.
