Frequently asked questions
Short answers about WordCraft, checked against the project’s documentation.
What is WordCraft?
WordCraft is a free, open-source word processor made by the ArtCraft team. It is modelled on Microsoft Word, with a ribbon, styles, tables, track changes, references and mail merge, and it reads and writes .docx files. It is written in Rust and runs natively on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD.
Is WordCraft free?
Yes. WordCraft is free to download and use, and its source code is open under your choice of the MIT or Apache-2.0 licence.
Who makes WordCraft?
The ArtCraft team, together with open-source contributors on GitHub. WordCraft is one of ArtCraft’s Crafting Apps, a set of free creative tools written in Rust.
Is this the official WordCraft website?
No. GetWordCraft is an independent site and is not affiliated with ArtCraft. The official sources are WordCraft on getartcraft.com and the GitHub repository. Every download link on this site goes to the official GitHub releases.
Can WordCraft open and save Word documents?
Yes. WordCraft opens and saves .docx files and can open older .doc files. It also opens and saves .odt, .rtf, HTML, Markdown, LaTeX and plain text, and exports PDF. It is still in alpha and hasn’t been tested against a large set of real-world documents yet, so keep a copy of anything important before you edit it.
Can WordCraft replace Microsoft Word?
Not completely, yet. As of October 2026 the WordCraft team estimates it is about 60% of the way to replacing Word for real work and about 63% for everyday essentials. It covers most of Word’s ribbon commands, but page layout can differ from Word and some content isn’t fully supported. See how it compares with Word.
How is WordCraft different from LibreOffice?
Both are free and open source. LibreOffice is an established office suite with its own interface, spreadsheets and presentations, in 120 languages. WordCraft is a new word processor in alpha that copies Word’s ribbon and shortcuts and uses .docx as its main format. Read the comparison.
Can AI agents such as Claude use WordCraft?
Yes. Its command-line tool, wordcraft-cli, includes an MCP server, so Claude and other agents can create, edit and save documents, with or without a window. You can keep the agent to the folders you choose. How to set it up.
Which operating systems does WordCraft support?
Windows (x64, ARM64 and 32-bit), macOS (one universal app for Apple silicon and Intel Macs), Linux (x86_64, ARM64 and RISC-V) and FreeBSD (x86_64). There is also a web build for people who want to host it on their own server.

No. Google’s Wordcraft is an AI-assisted story-writing tool from Google’s PAIR research team. WordCraft the word processor comes from ArtCraft. The two projects are unrelated.
Is it safe to download WordCraft?
Download it only from the official GitHub releases, which is where every link on this site points. The Windows installers are code-signed by Learning Machines Inc, and the macOS app is signed by Learning Machines LLC and notarized by Apple. Each release also publishes SHA-256 checksums so you can verify a file; the download page shows how. Is WordCraft safe? covers the signatures we checked, what the app does with your files and what alpha means for your documents.
Should I choose the installer or the portable version on Windows?
The installer (.msi) installs WordCraft like any other Windows program. The portable version (.zip) runs from whatever folder you unzip it into, without installing anything. That’s handy on a USB drive or on a computer where you can’t install software.
How do I update WordCraft?
Download the newest version from the download page and install it. On Linux, AppImage builds can also update themselves with AppImageUpdate. ArtCraft’s official launcher can install and update the Crafting Apps for you. The releases page shows what changed in each version.
WordCraft won’t start or keeps crashing. What can I do?
On Windows, start-up problems are usually related to graphics drivers. The Windows download page lists the fixes the WordCraft team recommends. If that doesn’t help, report the problem on GitHub and attach the log file. On Windows it is in %APPDATA%\WordCraft\logs\, on macOS in ~/Library/Application Support/WordCraft/logs/, and on Linux in ~/.config/wordcraft/logs/.
